The Nebuta Festival is a festival that represents summer in Aomori City, and it is also a festival that symbolically marks the end of the short summer in northern Japan. For the locals, businesses and various organizations involved in the festival, this is the culmination of months of preparation. As the festival day approaches, the entire city of Aomori is filled with excitement. The Nebuta Festival is one of the three major festivals in Tohoku held in August, along with the Sendai Tanabata Festival and the Akita Kanto Festival. More than 2.5 million tourists visit from August 2nd to 7th every year. The heart of the festival is the Nebuta float. These are huge lanterns that are lit up, and are often made to depict historical events or kabuki acts. Festival participants push Nebuta floats along a 3km procession route, while locals and tourists from all over Japan sit along the road and watch the procession. During the procession, dancers called jumpers perform dances while chanting “Lassera”, cheering on the procession and exciting the audience. The bass drums played by the ohayashi group reverberate along the route of the Nebuta procession, and the audience enjoys the taste of the festival at the food stalls. The most popular theory is that the origin of the Nebuta Festival is a combination of the Tanabata Festival, which celebrates the stars, and the Aomori custom called Nebuta Nagashi. During these events, people would float lanterns down rivers and the sea. The floats of today’s Nebuta Festival evolved from this. The giant human-shaped Nebuta floats that can be seen today became established after World War II, and in 1980, the Nebuta Festival was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Currently, the Japanese government protects the Nebuta Festival due to its beauty and traditional culture. The festival will be held over six days, with evening Nebuta services starting at 7:10pm from August 2nd to August 6th. On the 6th, all 22 Nebuta floats will be unveiled. On August 7th, the final day, the festival begins with a noon Nebuta float starting at 1:00 pm, and concludes with a nighttime sailing featuring the year’s best Nebuta floats and fireworks. Furthermore, prior to the 6-day festival, a Nebuta Festival eve will be held on August 1st at Nebuta Rasse Land, where Nebuta floats will be assembled. There will be food stalls and music playing at the venue, as well as displays of completed Nebuta floats and an Asamushi Onsen fireworks display. What is “hikite”?

Each float has around 20 pullers, usually young men, with 10 at the front and 10 at the back directly below the float. Nebuta floats are supported by large truck tires and weigh up to 4 tons, making pulling them a difficult task. The bearer is tasked with steering the float by pushing a horizontal wooden pole, moving it back and forth and turning it 360 degrees. In other words, pullers are the people who are responsible for running the show. The puller stands in front of the float and receives instructions from the fan bearer (the float’s guide), who communicates the direction through flute and fan movements. The various whistle tones and fan movements tell the puller how to maneuver the float for the most dynamic movement. Rather than just pushing it straight, the puller follows the instructions of the fan bearer to stop and tilt the Nebuta float towards the audience, allowing the audience to see the intricate details up close.
Special experience in Aomori The general public can participate in the Aomori Nebuta Festival by participating as a “Haneto” (jumper). On the other hand, the role of “puller” who actually moves the Nebuta has been considered a special role, basically limited to those involved in the participating organizations. This valuable experience was proposed as part of Aomori City’s new hometown tax return gift, the “hiki-te experience.” “Up until now, Aomori City’s return gifts have mainly been specialty products such as apples, but experiences are the real appeal of Aomori. We hope people will find value in them,” said a city employee. A city official says, “The first step is for people to experience the charm of Aomori with their five senses and become fans of Aomori. We hope this will be an opportunity for them to come back again and again.”
