Craftsmanship that inherits traditional Japanese beauty Osaka ranma is one of the important architectural styles in traditional Japanese architecture, and is characterized by its unique design that is rich in decoration, including elaborate carvings. Its history dates back to the 17th century, and it developed in Osaka, where merchant culture flourished. ＜Osaka Ranma Tradition and Certification＞ Osaka Ranma was certified as a “traditional craft” by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1975, and as a “traditional craft” by the Governor of Osaka Prefecture in 1986. This officially recognizes its technical excellence and cultural value. ＜Characteristics of Osaka Ranma＞ The most distinctive feature of Osaka Ranma is the elaborate carvings that make full use of openwork and relief techniques. The delicate design takes advantage of the contrast between light and shadow and brings style and flavor to the space. The wood used is domestic materials such as cedar, cypress, paulownia, and zelkova, and each piece is painstakingly finished by craftsmen. In recent years, as new uses for traditional crafts have been sought after, Osaka ranma has also been integrated with modern architecture and interior design.
