By solving mysteries using techniques that are unique to the Showa era as well as techniques that are currently in use in the Reiwa era, it is an event that can be enjoyed by everyone from the Showa generation to the younger generation. Our hotel is full of the history built by our predecessors and the memories of our guests, and is a space where senior guests can feel nostalgic, while younger guests can feel a sense of newness. Our hotel will continue to promote tourism in Atami as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Showa era. ＜Story＞ “To you in 1930” A half-finished letter arrived at my 75-year-old grandmother. It was a letter from my grandfather, who passed away 40 years ago. When I looked at the postmark, I realized that the letter had been sent from Hotel New Akao. Hotel New Akao is where my grandma and grandpa went on their honeymoon. And this is the hotel where the two of them went on a trip for the last time before Grandpa passed away. “Why are letters cut off in the middle?” “What did Grandpa want to convey?” –. In order to uncover the truth behind this letter, I invited my younger brother to visit Hotel New Akao. Japan has grown spectacularly since post-war reconstruction and entered a period of high economic growth, becoming the world’s second-largest economy. Home appliances became popular, lifestyles changed, and culture such as movies, music, and fashion flourished, and Japan was full of bright energy for the future. The Tokaido Shinkansen line opened in Atami in 1964, and during the period of high economic growth, many people visited on their honeymoons and company trips, making it a popular tourist destination in Japan. The experiences and rich culture gained during the fast-paced and turbulent Showa era have become the foundation of today’s Japan, and continue to be loved by generations as a new form of “Showa Retro.” Hotel New Akao opened in Atami in 1973 (Showa 48). Although it was temporarily closed in 2021 due to the effects of the new coronavirus infection, it will restart in 2023 as a hotel with a strong Showa flavor rooted in the Reiwa era, with the concept of “reviving the symbol of Atami from 1988.” It is our hope that this space, filled with the history of the hotel and the memories of our guests over half a century, will be passed down from generation to generation while valuing the humanity and culture of the Showa era.
