Representative Director: Motoki Saito) has been working with local stakeholders to develop content and conduct verification through monitor tours in order to materialize “Nagawa Tourism,” which was launched in the Nagawa district of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture in 2026. This initiative is based on the “Sustainable Nagawa Area Promotion Plan 2023” and aims to develop and foster experiential tourism in the Nagawa area, attract more tourists, strengthen local PR, and increase the number of people involved. We would like to introduce reports of three monitor tours on the themes of trails, food, and agriculture that were conducted as specific initiatives in 2020.

During the tour, we took a walk around the Nyuyama area, which is the entrance to the Nogi Kodo, and thought about the lives and culture of people in the past. At Matsudaya, an inn that is a historic cultural property, you can enjoy Nagawa’s traditional dish “Toji Soba” while interacting with the locals. Participants commented on the unique way of eating soba, which involves dipping the soba noodles in piping hot soup stock, saying, “Taking it while talking with the locals made it even more

Approximately 20 people participated, and it was a lively event, mainly from families. During the tour, the children experienced harvesting Hohei turnips under the guidance of local farmers, and as they touched the soil, they realized the importance of food. Afterwards, we took on the challenge of making local dishes using freshly harvested turnips, and prepared pickles while learning from the locals. During the tasting, there was an anecdote in which “a child who didn’t like turnips was surprisingly enjoying the pickles he had made himself,” which served as an opportunity to increase interest in ingredients. In a survey conducted after the tour, the ability to enjoy both agricultural and food culture experiences was particularly praised, with many saying, “I was able to spend special time with my family” and “It was a valuable experience to learn about Nagawa’s traditional food.” The tour allowed you to experience Nagawa’s food culture with all five senses, from harvest to cooking.
