Sumitomo Corporation Green Earth Institute Co., Ltd. Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “JAL”), Airbus (hereinafter “Airbus”), Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Nippon Paper”), Sumitomo Corporation (hereinafter “Sumitomo”), and Green Earth Institute, Inc. (hereinafter “GEI”, collectively the “Five Companies”) have signed a memorandum of understanding for the purpose of mutual collaboration towards the realization of sustainable aviation fuel (hereinafter “SAF”) using bioethanol derived from domestic wood. Nippon Paper Industries, Sumitomo Corporation, and GEI launched the Morisora Project (R) in February 2023 with the slogan “Turning the power of the forest into the power of flight,” and in February 2025 they signed an agreement to establish a joint venture company to manufacture and sell bioethanol and other products made from woody biomass. Through this, we are moving forward with efforts aimed at realizing SAF using bioethanol made from domestic wood. JAL and Airbus are newly participating in this project, and by collaborating with businesses involved in the supply and demand of SAF, we will promote the spread and expansion of domestically produced SAF.

revitalization, including the forest cycle of “cutting, using, planting, and growing” trees, job creation, and utilization of domestically produced SAF. In this context, JAL has set a goal of replacing 10% of all onboard fuel with SAF by 2030, and will promote the construction of a supply chain by connecting SAF raw material suppliers to manufacturing stakeholders. Airbus will support the acquisition of CORSIA certification for SAF, which is made from domestic wood, and will contribute to the aviation industry’s goal of achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Leveraging their respective strengths, the five companies will work to realize a decarbonized society through resource recycling, revitalize local communities, and realize a sustainable future through the production and dissemination of domestically produced SAF derived from bioethanol using domestic wood. (*1) LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). A method of evaluating the environmental impact of products and services throughout the entire process, from production to disposal. (*2) CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation). An international initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the international aviation industry.
