In Inabe City, Mie Prefecture, we had a wonderful indigo dyeing experience at the “Ise Ai JAPAN Workshop”, a rare place that faithfully reproduces the lye fermentation technique of the Edo period. The encounter made me feel like I was being guided to Inabe City, where I was born and raised, and I felt comfortable blending in there, and I was convinced that the indigo dyed here was truly authentic. He was amazed at the efficacy of indigo dyeing made using this technique, and at the same time, this led him to take action to establish a workshop at the Lake Mashu Youth Hostel in eastern Hokkaido, which he manages to pass on traditional culture. The blue of Lake Mashu in the national park and the local water resonate with indigo.
