Shimane Prefecture, which has been ridiculed as “Japan’s best countryside,” is a thing of the past, and that negative has now turned into a positive. Shimane Prefecture is in the shadows, and I think that’s really good. The amount of things that come in from the outside is minimal, and there is almost nothing that goes out from the inside. Precisely because it was closed off, a unique history and culture were born, and the unique temperament and spirit of Shimane Prefecture was nurtured, and has been carefully preserved. Cover Ceramic board “Chicken” by Kenji Funaki (1927-2015) When we think of Shimane, everyone says in unison that it is a place associated with folk crafts. However, in Shimane, where I actually traveled, many of the old things remain, and the people of Shimane have carefully protected them. It just seems like that was it. Kenji Funaki’s work has a desire to spread its wings from Shimane to the world, and with his “Kimachi glaze” and “slipware” that were directly inherited by Bernard Leach, it seemed like he was expressing “the culture and climate surrounding folk crafts” on a single ceramic plate. It is the very scenery of Shimane, where I lived for two months, and I feel that it has a “Shimane-esque” design, similar to the “Sekishu tiles” that are dyed with the same Kimachi glaze. “d design travel”

The lifestyle brand “Iwami Ginzan Gungendo” has now expanded its main branch offices nationwide. The town where the main store is located is the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine Ruins, which has been selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I lived in this “world heritage site” for about two months during the reporting period. It may sound nice to say that, but what I
experienced there was simply a normal “life typical of the place”. Why does this town remain so beautiful without being turned into a tourist destination? We learned about the future of tourism, such as “renovating old folk houses” and “studying abroad at nursery schools.” ・The person who created Shimane Prefecture’s “character” – Matsue no Herun Yakumo Koizumi, known as the author of “Kaidan”. His real name is Patrick Lafcadio Hearn. Born in Greece, he developed a strong interest in Japan after encountering Japanese culture at an expo in the United States and reading the English translation of the Kojiki, and came to Japan at the age of 39. NHK’s 2025 TV drama series “Bakebake” is based on Yakumo Koizumi’s wife, Setsu Koizumi, who is a person of the moment. What is the “Matsue-ness” seen from the life of Yakumo Koizumi? Newly written by Nozomi Inoue, a writer unique to Shimane Prefecture, whose family home is a shrine. ・Traditional performing art unique to Shimane Prefecture – Easy-to-understand Iwami Kagura Iwami Kagura is a traditional performing art unique to Shimane Prefecture, where gods and demons dance dynamically to the melancholy sound of flutes and up-tempo drum music, based on Japanese mythology passed down through the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Nationwide, when people think of Kagura, they tend to think of it as sacred and awe-inspiring, but “Iwami Kagura” is unexpectedly “everyday, traditional entertainment.” We will also introduce performances featuring many gods associated with Shimane Prefecture, including Okuninushi, the deity enshrined at Izumo Taisha Shrine. Be sure to prepare and enjoy the unique culture of Shimane to the fullest! • Serialization ・Naoto Fukasawa (product designer) / I want to hear the designer’s slow pace No. 54 “Home appliances that have finally become normal” ・Takagi Takagi (owner of Kougei Fuuka) / 47 prefectures’ “Folk Crafts” 25th, Shimane Prefecture “Imayori Nakini” ・Daisaburo Sakamoto (Yamabushi) / Long-life festivals in 47 prefectures 26th Shimane Prefecture “Festivals, Mountains and Iron” In addition, there are about 70 places featured, such as “Shimane Usual” which introduces the unique customs found by the editorial department that are commonplace in the area, the unique food culture of the prefecture that we felt from developing “Shimane Teishoku”, and the “Editor’s Diary” which describes the uniqueness of the region as seen and experienced during our stay there. We convey “Shimane-ness” from various perspectives. Linked project: A project where you can enjoy the Shimane train in three dimensions will be held at Shibuya Hikarie in Tokyo, and we will convey the uniqueness of Shimane Prefecture through various experiences. 1. “d design travel SHIMANE EXHIBITION” is an exhibition that expresses this book in three dimensions Image

For example, the Shimane Prefectural Arts and Culture Center, a magnificent art base representing Shimane
Prefecture, From “Grantowa”, a part of the wall made of stone tiles, which is an icon of the building. In Shimane Prefecture, which is said to be a place associated with folk crafts, you can find Iwami-yaki jars from the Izumo Folk Crafts Museum, where you can learn about the history and present of folk crafts in Shimane Prefecture. Gungendo, the lifestyle brand that made Iwami Ginzan famous throughout the country, will be exhibiting products such as Omori’s vegetable dyeing series. Through the unique design of the many exhibits that seem to have jumped out from the pages of the magazine, the editorial department will give you a sense of the “present-day Shimane” that you have walked, seen, heard, learned, and eaten, rediscovering its charm, and creating an opportunity to actually travel to Shimane Prefecture. In addition to pre-selling the “Shimane-go” at the museum shop in the venue prior to its nationwide release, we will also be holding a “Shimane Bussan MARKET” where we will introduce and sell Shimane Prefecture’s proud souvenirs selected by d47 MUSEUM, including Shimane Prefecture souvenirs that the magazine’s editorial department came across through interviews and would like to recommend.
Approximately 200 items will be gathered together in one place, including tableware, washi paper, and indigo-dyed products made from handicrafts that are rooted in each region of the prefecture, unique products made from leftover materials from Iwami Kagura, clams from Lake Shinji, and delicious souvenirs such as sweets and alcohol made with plenty of local ingredients. Together with the new “Shimane Set Meal” menu offered at the attached d47 cafeteria, this is a project where you can experience the charm of Shimane through your five senses as you read books, see exhibits, pick up products, and eat local cuisine. D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT A store style activity group founded in 2000 by designer Kenmei Nagaoka with the theme of “long life design.” We currently have 14 stores in Japan and overseas (Hokkaido, Fukushima, Saitama, Tokyo, Tokyo/Shibuya Hikarie, Toyama, Aichi, Mie, Kyoto, Kagoshima, Okinawa, South Korea/Seoul, South Korea/Jeju,
China/Huangsan). With one base in each of the 47 prefectures, we are discovering and introducing “long-lasting designs that are unique to each region” on a nationwide scale. “d design travel” was first published in 2009, and “d47 MUSEUM”, Japan’s first museum of design products from all 47 prefectures, was opened on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie in 2012. In conjunction with the attached “d47 Design Travel Store” and “d47 Shokudo”, we have created a new style that conveys Japan in three dimensions. Through product sales, food and beverages, publishing, and tourism, we are conducting activities that redefine 47 aspects of Japan’s uniqueness.
