Also selected from Japan are Mirukashi Salon (Saga Prefecture), Kumano Nachi Taisha and Seigantoji Temple (Wakayama Prefecture), and Nintendo Museum (Kyoto Prefecture). This award is also a result of the efforts made in 2020 by a collaboration between the Sado Tourism Exchange Organization, Sado City, NOTE Co., Ltd., and Niigata Nippo Co., Ltd. in support of the town development company Aikawa Kurumaza.
Additionally, we believe that this selection will provide a great impetus for the Niigata Prefecture Tourism Association to play a leading role in working together with the “Regional High Value-Added Inbound Tourist Destination Development Project (Sado/Niigata Area),” which was selected by the Japan Tourism Agency in September 2024. “NIPPONIA Sado Aikawa Kanayama Town” and the charm of Sado Island recognized by the world “NIPPONIA Sado Aikawa Kanayama Town” has been highly praised around the world, and it is thought that it was highly praised for realizing sustainable tourism while making use of the historic townscape. Aikawa, Sado Island, where the inn is located, was once a prosperous gold mining town, and in recognition of its 400-year history, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024. The project was particularly praised for its efforts to rebuild these precious cultural heritage sites, not just as tourist
attractions, but as places where people can interact with the local community through lodging, and to transform them into stay-type tourism that offers a deep experience of Sado Island’s history, culture, nature, and interaction. Another factor behind the selection was the promotion of the “town-wide hotel” concept and the success of tourism initiatives in collaboration with the local community. In addition to serving as a lodging facility, we have created a system that allows guests to experience the charms of Sado to the fullest by working closely with local restaurants and tourist facilities.
