This year’s cherry blossoms are expected to be in full bloom from late March to early April, but through projection mapping and digital art, you can enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms even before they are in full bloom. Nijo Castle is one of Kyoto’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spots, with 300 cherry blossom trees of about 50 varieties in full bloom. The variety of cherry blossoms of each variety will be colored fantastically with the light production. In addition to drinks and food made with cherry blossoms that give you the spring feel, the food and beverage area will also feature a “Sakura Night Picnic Area*” where you can enjoy cherry blossoms at night with peace of mind, even with small children, and a banquet area “Yoizakura no Niwa” where adults can relax and enjoy a drink. In addition, the “Premium Cherry Blossom Viewing Area” will be held for 10 days only, from March 28th (Friday) to April 6th (Sunday), when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and you can experience interacting with geisha and maikos and playing tatami mats at Seiryuen, one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Nijo Castle. Also, you cannot bring anything other than food and drinks purchased at the south gate into the picnic area. ■Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, cherry blossoms and dandelions filled with children’s prayers bloom in the inner moat of Nijo Castle “DANDELION PROJECT” is a participatory art project that installs “DANDELION,” an interactive art object with a dandelion motif, around the world and makes flowers that are a symbol of peace bloom all over the world. We held a workshop with local children in cooperation with the Kurodani Children’s Restaurant Kokoro Bakano Association. While learning about the history of Nijo Castle, the children painted cherry blossoms with their wishes for peace. Illustrations of cherry blossoms drawn by children will be projected onto the inner moat as part of DANDELION. Furthermore, in the inner moat, a documentary video introducing the background and production process of the project will be shown along with the gorgeous projection mapping show “Oka Ranman”. To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, this is a special performance that will send prayers for peace from Nijo Castle to the world through cherry blossoms, DANDELION, and other flowers that represent spring.
