In 2024, shaved ice inspired by Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shonagon, who are associated with the taiga drama and Hyakunin Isshu, will be on sale. This time, as the second part, we will offer two contrasting types of shaved ice with the theme of waka poems from the “Hyakunin Isshu” that are love poems from the Heian period. The first one, “Shinobu Lemon ~Mitsuiro no Koi~”, expresses the secret love that is so high that it cannot be hidden, with sweet and sour honey lemon. The second one, “Kogare Tiramisu ~Omokage no Yoin~”, is characterized by its bittersweet and deep taste, filled with the sad but strong feelings of waiting for someone who will never come. –The two forms of love are put into the ephemeral yet beautiful frozen dessert of shaved ice, combining ingredients from Shiga and Italian sweets techniques. Enjoy a moment where words and flavors resonate together at Cafe Berlago, overlooking Lake Biwa. ■ Shinobu Lemon ~Mitsuiro no Koi~ 1,200 yen (drink set 1,900 yen) Youthful excitement and the embarrassment of having your feelings revealed. This “sweet and sour love” is reflected in the refreshing acidity of honey and lemon from Azuchi, Shiga Prefecture. Lemon confiture is hidden at the bottom of the bowl, and the syrup of Oumi strawberries from Shiga Prefecture is added as a finishing touch, dyeing it in the color of the heart that suddenly spills out. The tuile of a bee attracted by sweet nectar is used as an accent.

Vanilla ice cream is added inside, gently depicting the depth of feelings through the contrast of bitterness and sweetness. The taste of tiramisu, which has been popular since the opening of Bellago, has been captured in a summer ice cream. It is a drink that gently brings back memories of the past.

A collection of one waka poem by each of 100 poets from imperial anthologies of waka poetry compiled by order of the emperor, such as the Kokin Wakashū and Shin Kokin Wakashū. It is said to have been selected by Fujiwara Teika, a poet active from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. During the Edo period, it began to be mass-produced using woodblock printing and became popular. Today, it is also known as “Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Competitive Karuta,” which respects tradition while also being enjoyed as a sport. Every year, the Omi Kangakukan in Omi Shrine in Otsu City hosts the Master and Queen tournaments and the National High School Championships, where players from all over the country compete to become number one in Japan. Shaved Ice in the Heian Period The origins of shaved ice date back to the Imperial Court in the Heian period. As described in “The Pillow Book,” ice was a special refreshing treat that only aristocrats could enjoy at the time. Perhaps the poets who composed these waka poems also relaxed their hearts with a spoonful of ice and felt the afterglow of love.
